The
French Maternal School’s approach provides for two teachers in
every classroom. The low ratio of teachers to students (1:6) allows
for small group learning and individual instruction, meeting the needs
of each student.
Les
Petits (3s):
The
French Maternal School’s curriculum for 3s is designed
to
introduce children to school gradually. It offers a loving and
nurturing environment where students learn to build
relationships with their peers and develop community-based
routines. The curriculum offers formal and structured activities
for further developing reading and writing skills: promotion of
phonological and phonemic awareness and building of alphabetic
skills including letter identification. Calligraphy and
pre-writing are also introduced.
Les
Moyens (4s): The
curriculum prepares 4s for more formal and structured
activities of Les Grands.
The
program emphasizes the
acquisition of the fundamentals: letters & numbers, math,
problem solving, creative thinking that provide numerous avenues
leading toward the goal of literacy. The program increases
letter, syllable and word recognition and solidifies alphabetic
know-ledge.
Les
Grands (5s) The
third year of the maternelle heavily reinforces all aspects of
learning and development and more especially language structure
and time and space concepts. Music and drama are included in the
curriculum as a way to support learning of the arts and
individual creativity.
