Grande Section (GS)

(Kindergarten)
5+ years old

Grande Section is the final year of the Maternelle program and serves as an important transition between preschool and elementary education. The curriculum focuses on strengthening literacy, developing fluent communication in French, and expanding mathematical reasoning.

Students explore written and spoken language structure, concepts of time and space, and foundational arithmetic such as addition and subtraction. Independence, perseverance, and positive learning habits are encouraged as children prepare for the expectations of first grade.

Music education and instrumental practice remain part of the program to support artistic expression and creativity. Students typically attend five days per week, with class sizes ranging from 8 to 12 students and a student-to-teacher ratio between 1:4 and 1:6.

The Grande Section is the final year of Maternelle and represents an important transition between the preschool years and elementary school. As the graduating year, the program prepares students for a successful entry into First Grade, strengthening academic skills while fostering independence, perseverance, and confidence.

Advanced Literacy and Language

A strong emphasis is placed on language development and literacy, with particular attention to speaking fluently in French. Students develop both oral and written language skills, learning to structure sentences, express ideas clearly, and understand increasingly complex vocabulary.

Through reading and writing activities, children continue refining their ability to recognize words, construct sentences, and communicate their thoughts effectively.

Mathematical Reasoning

In Grande Section, students expand their mathematical understanding through activities that encourage reasoning and problem solving. They explore concepts such as addition and subtraction, as well as relationships between numbers.

Children also develop an understanding of time and space concepts, strengthening their ability to organize information, follow sequences, and understand patterns within everyday situations.

Independence and Learning Habits

An important goal of the Grande Section is helping students develop the independence and work habits necessary for elementary school. Teachers guide students in learning how to focus on tasks, persist through challenges, and take responsibility for their work.

Students are encouraged to develop curiosity, discipline, and confidence, all of which are essential skills for continued academic success.

Music and Creative Development

Music continues to be an integral part of the curriculum. Through instrumental practice, listening activities, and musical exploration, students deepen their appreciation for the arts while strengthening concentration and creative expression.

These artistic experiences complement academic learning and support the development of imagination and self-expression.

Character and Core Values

In the Grande Section, the teaching of core virtues becomes especially meaningful. Students are guided to demonstrate a strong set of moral and intellectual values, including respect, responsibility, perseverance, and kindness.

These principles help shape students not only as learners but also as thoughtful members of their community.

Primary Skills Achievement

By the end of the Grande Section, students are expected to achieve the full set of Primary Skills outlined in the curriculum, ensuring they are well prepared academically, socially, and emotionally for the transition to elementary school.

Schedule and Class Structure

Students typically attend five days per week. To ensure individualized attention and strong teacher support, classes maintain a small size of 8–12 students, with a teacher-to-student ratio of 1:4–6.

A Confident Step Toward Elementary School

The Grande Section provides students with the academic tools, personal confidence, and strong values they need to successfully begin their elementary school journey.
